First time was an accident, second time was a coincidence, third time was a pattern. Shingo wasn't as generous as the adage; two strikes was more than enough for a paranoid assassin. Without any explanation to Ran, he casually pulled out his phone while they were paused at a crosswalk and typed out a text to his teammates giving their location and asking for some back-up.
So when the phone rang a minute later, he was expecting it to be one of them. Was expecting it, but the number wasn't recognized. In fact, it wasn't even IDing.
He almost didn't answer. Almost. But with a connection like Kritiker, better not to ignore a call just because the number was restricted. With an apologetic look to Ran, he pulled it to his ear.
"Hello? This is Matsuda Shingo."
"This is Takatori Mamoru. I'd like a word."
Shingo paled. Unable to hide the awkwardness on his face, he glanced at Ran and uncertainly replied.
"Ah... This isn't the best time..."
"Oh? That is unfortunate. I'm afraid my schedule may prove less flexible than yours. Considering the importance of what I have to say, please make an accommodation."
A grimace, and Shingo held up a finger to Ran to signal he'd be back in a minute and took off down the sidewalk just to get out of earshot from her. He'd have to keep an eye on her somehow.
